For vehicles, machines, and objects that come in pairs. More specific than cái.

Primary Uses

1. Vehicles & Transportation

chiếc xe(car/vehicle) — car/vehicle
chiếc xe máy(motorcycle) — motorcycle
chiếc máy bay(airplane) — airplane
chiếc tàu(ship) — ship
chiếc xe đạp(bicycle) — bicycle
chiếc thuyền(boat) — boat (vs con thuyền(small boat))

Examples:

Chiếc xe này đắt lắm.(This car is very expensive.) — This car is very expensive.

Tôi mua một chiếc xe máy mới.(I bought a new motorcycle.) — I bought a new motorcycle.

2. One of a Pair

chiếc giày(one shoe) — one shoe
chiếc nhẫn(ring) — ring (on one finger)
