ăn (eat) + quả (fruit) + nhớ (remember) + kẻ (person) + trồng (plant) + cây (tree). The tree planter will never taste the fruit they planted — but you, eating the fruit, must remember them.

This is perhaps THE most important Vietnamese proverb about gratitude (lòng biết ơn). It teaches children to remember teachers, parents, ancestors, benefactors. It's the antithesis of "ăn cháo đá bát."
