Questions & Question Words
Không? Gì? Ai? Đâu? Bao giờ?
Vietnamese questions keep the same word order as statements. Add a question word or particle — done.
Yes/No Questions: Add "Không?"
Statement → Question
Em ăn cơm. (You eat rice.)
Em ăn cơm không? (Do you eat rice?)
Just add "không?" at the end!
Anh thích cà phê. (You like coffee.)
Anh thích cà phê không? (Do you like coffee?)
Question Words (Wh- Questions)
Gì? (What?)
Em ăn gì? (What do you eat?)
Đây là gì? (What is this?)
Ai? (Who?)
Ai đi? (Who goes?)
Đây là ai? (Who is this?)
Đâu? / Ở đâu? (Where?)
Em ở đâu? (Where do you live?)
Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? (Where is the bathroom?)
Bao giờ? / Khi nào? (When?)
Em đi bao giờ? (When do you go?)
Khi nào em đến? (When will you arrive?)
Sao? / Tại sao? (Why?)
Sao em không đi? (Why don't you go?)
Tại sao em buồn? (Why are you sad?)
Như thế nào? / Thế nào? (How?)
Em học như thế nào? (How do you study?)
Thời tiết thế nào? (How's the weather?)
Bao nhiêu? (How many? / How much?)
Bao nhiêu tiền? (How much money?)
Em có bao nhiêu sách? (How many books do you have?)
Question Word Placement
Rule: Question word replaces the part you're asking about
Tôi ăn cơm. → Tôi ăn gì? (I eat what?)
"Gì" replaces "cơm" (the object)
Em đi Hà Nội. → Em đi đâu? (You go where?)
"Đâu" replaces "Hà Nội" (the location)
Anh là Nam. → Anh là ai? (You are who?)
"Ai" replaces "Nam" (the identity)
Polite Question Particles
Ạ? (polite particle at end)
Em ăn cơm không ạ?
Do you eat rice? (very polite, to elder/superior)
À? (seeking clarification)
Em đi đâu à?
Where are you going? (casual, curious)
