Possession & "Của"
My Book = Sách Của Tôi
Vietnamese uses "của" (of) to show possession. But it's often dropped when context is clear.
Basic Pattern: Noun + Của + Possessor
Sách của tôi
My book (Book of me)
Noun + của + Possessor
Nhà của em
Your house (House of you)
Bạn của tôi
My friend (Friend of me)
When to Drop "Của"
Close Relationships: Often Drop "Của"
Mẹ tôi (my mother) — more natural than "mẹ của tôi"
Anh em (your older brother) — more natural than "anh của em"
Bạn tôi (my friend) — can drop "của"
Objects & Belongings: Usually Keep "Của"
Sách của tôi (my book) — keep "của"
Điện thoại của em (your phone) — keep "của"
Xe của anh (your car) — keep "của"
Possessive Pronouns
Của tôi = Mine (of me)
Của em = Yours (of you)
Của anh ấy / của chị ấy = His / Hers (of him / of her)
Của chúng tôi / của chúng ta = Ours (of us)
